FDA clears first melanoma drug to extend life

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a breakthrough cancer medication from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. that researchers have heralded as the first drug shown to prolong the lives of patients with advanced skin cancer.

A vaccine, containing agents boosting the body's response to skin cancer, is being tested in the UK. Early results show that the shot, which attacks tumour cells, but leaves healthy cells undamaged, has helped some patients fully recover from potentially fatal melanoma, even in its advanced stages.
