Every now and then someone suggests they may have uncovered the oldest known photograph of New York City. The latest example is a 4-by-5 1/4 inch daguerreotype image of a rural estate on what Sotheby’s conjectures is the old Bloomingdale Road (a site that would fall today within the Upper West Side of Manhattan). The auction house, which is to sell the photograph on March 30, has invited experts to take a look in the meantime. | |
