Abraham Lincoln was hailed on his 200th birthday with celebrations from his home states of Kentucky and Illinois to the nation's capital. President Obama and congressional leaders praised Lincoln as the embodiment of American ideals of freedom, equality and unity.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Library of Congress marks 200 years since the birth of Abraham Lincoln on Thursday by opening a special exhibit featuring his handwritten speeches and artifacts, including the Bible used last month by President Obama during his swearing-in.
