The city's 14 miles of public coastline are ready for action this summer. "New York City has one of the finest municipal beach systems in the entire world," NYC Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe boasted. "In addition to the sand and the surf, there's food, amusement parks, sports, hiking trails — and it's all basically free."

New York's popular High Line walking trail/park opens another section

The former elevated railroad tracks turned park and walking trail on the city's lower West Side -- near the Meatpacking District and Hudson River -- opened a second section Tuesday with a ceremony attended by the mayor and other officials.
