The Jesus Montero Era started with the nervous rookie striking out against Jon Lester with the bases loaded in the first inning at Fenway and most in a crowd of 38,074 radiating bad vibes at him.

But by the end of the night, "everything felt normal" for Montero, the Yankees' top hitting prospect. Montero, called up from Triple-A Scranton Thursday, batted seventh and went 0-for-4 as the designated hitter. He got hit by a pitch and scored the go-ahead run from first base on Russell Martin's seventh-inning double.

"It was amazing for me," said the 21-year-old, who hit .288 with 18 homers and 67 RBI in 109 games at Scranton. "I didn't get a base hit, but I hope soon.

"Thank God I'm here. I'm getting more comfortable every at-bat."

His manager noticed. "I thought it was pretty good," said Joe Girardi, who could have pinch-hit for Montero in the seventh but stuck with him. "He's never seen Lester. I felt good about him at the plate."
