Umpires' mistakes are often brushed aside as part of the human element of baseball. Wednesday night, even instant replay couldn't do the job.

The umpires blew a home run call that went against the Yankees, apparently the result of a misinterpretation of the Kauffman Stadium ground rules.

Billy Butler's controversial solo homer - which should have been a double - was part of the Royals' four-run third inning, one which helped Kansas City avoid a sweep with a 5-4 win over the Yankees.

The blown call was not the only reason the Bombers saw their three-game winning streak snapped, as Bartolo Colon allowed five runs in five innings, the offense wasted a pair of bases-loaded opportunities in the first and last innings and the team went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
