NFL owners, players ready to resume negotiating in New York
Kevin Mawae, NFL Players Association President, is expected to be among the players joining the resumption of labor negotiations Wednesday in New York.
After another round of meetings between lawyers, the key figures in the NFL lockout resume talks here today that could launch the 2011 season. But as bargaining that led to a landmark NFL contract in 1993 illustrated, it's never a deal until it's done.
Attorneys and staffers for both sides met Monday and Tuesday. They'd done the same a week earlier to work on contract language, which could speed up the process of getting a deal ratified by players and owners.
"When you have … only the lawyers in the room, you're not doing a lot of negotiating. You're trying to get the language right," Detroit labor lawyer John Hancock Jr. says.
Stumbling blocks remain, including the key question of how to implement a wage scale for rookies.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, NFL Players Association chief DeMaurice Smith and several owners and players are set to return to the talks today.
