George Michael says he is to be interviewed by the Metropolitan Police as part of their Operation Weeting phone hacking investigation over information he claims to have about News International CEO Rebekah Brooks.

Writing on his Twitter this afternoon, he announced: 'Just spoke to my lawyer.... apparently they want to interview me about my comments on Rebekah Brooks here on twitter...

'Like i said, glad to help... :)) I have way more to tell the police than I can tweet to you here....Believe it or not, i've been careful so far!'

Last week on the day it was announced that the News Of The World would be closing as a result of the scandal, the star launched a tirade against the newspaper and its former editor, now the CEO of News International, Rebekah Brooks.

In a series of tweets, he insisted that News Of The World editor Rebekah Brooks told him personally the paper got the majority of its stories from the police.

He wrote: 'Rebekah Brooks sat two feet from me in my own home and told me that it was never the public that came to them with information on celebrities, and that the police always got there first.'

According to the Associated Press, the News Of The World found out about the former Wham! star's arrest for drug driving after crashing his car into a Snappy Snaps near his home by hacking his phone.

However, he insisted on his Twitter today that he was not motivated by revenge or to try and excuse himself of his behaviour.
