New York City's employers open more job positions, cut down on unemployment rates this summer: study
Despite gloomy economic times, more employers are looking to hire this summer as compared to the winter, according to a new report.
If you've been unemployed for some time, take heart. Things are on the upswing. Despite recent gloomy jobs data, the unemployment outlook for this summer is bright, with the number of New York area employers who plan to increase their staff levels up 9% compared with the winter months, according to a report due out Tuesday from Manpower.
When asked about their plans for the coming months, 20% of local companies said they planned to hire more employees, while 8% expect to cut staff. Nearly all of the remaining employers surveyed expect to maintain their current staff levels.
"Employers are feeling better about things and candidates are getting multiple job offers," said Manpower's regional director John Garofalo.
Among the sectors hiring locally: leisure and hospitality, construction, transportation and utilities, professional and business services and manufacturing. But employers in education and human services, education and government expect to cut back.
The local job forecast mirrors the country overall, where 20% of employers surveyed expect to boost hiring, while 8% expect to cut back.
