It’s easy to spot the tourists in New York; they’re the ones with the fanny packs and the guide books. Dorling Kindersley, publisher of the Eyewitness travel guides, is hoping its new iPhone app will help tourists blend in a little better. The company has digitized its Top Ten guide for New York City, putting Big Apple highlights at the touch of a finger instead of the turn of a page.

The app, available for 10 cities at $7 each, breaks down New York into easy-to-digest nuggets, like the top tourist sites, museums, galleries, stores, festivals, buildings and children’s interests. Each of these highlights is then reorganized by neighborhood. For instance, the New York Stock Exchange is listed among the top 10 historic buildings and among the top 10 things to see in Lower Manhattan.

Since the stock exchange was on my screen, I decided to use the app for a quick trip to Wall Street. A map function pinpointed the location, along with nearby sites, stores, restaurants and subway stops. Using the GPS function on my phone, the map also showed my location. Touching an icon on the screen “flipped” the map over to reveal a subway map, which helped me plot a route.

With the app, finding the exchange was pretty easy (especially since I work in Midtown). However, the map does not include locations outside Manhattan, so finding your way to Yankee Stadium or Prospect Park is a little harder.
