The sight of New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera jogging in from the bullpen has rarely — if ever — been viewed as a positive for the opposition, but when the bottom of the ninth inning dawned at Camden Yards on Wednesday night, the Baltimore Orioles couldn’t have been happier to see the all-but-certain Hall of Famer on the mound.

After flailing helplessly for eight innings against the rejuvenated Bartolo Colon, the Orioles tied the game in the ninth on Vladimir Guerrero’s one-out sacrifice fly. But they couldn’t complete the comeback, leaving the bases loaded in the 11th and 12th innings and two runners on in the 13th before ultimately falling, 4-1, in 15 innings in front of what remained of an announced 20,589 at Camden Yards.

The Yankees, who managed just one unearned run through 14 innings, finally broke the game open when Robinson Cano pounded Michael Gonzalez’s first pitch into right-center field gap for a double. With no outs, Gonzalez had inherited two base runners from Jeremy Accardo, who was pitching in his third consecutive inning and had battled out of jams in the previous two.

Three pitches later, Gonzalez hit Chris Dickerson in the helmet with a pitch and was immediately ejected by plate umpire Dan Bellino, who drew the ire of both dugouts all night. That forced the Orioles, who had no relievers left, to bring in Jeremy Guthrie, who was originally scheduled to start Thursday night. Now, Brad Bergesen, who was slated to start Friday, will likely get the start Thursday.

The game was the longest at Camden Yards since the Orioles went 17 innings in a 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on June 27, 2003.
