New York Yankees lose sixth straight after Tampa Bay Rays tag A.J. Burnett for five-run sixth inning
Add A.J. Burnett to the Yankees' long list of problems. Burnett, arguably the Bombers' most consistent starting pitcher this season, was in prime position to deliver a win Monday night over the first-place Rays and put an end to the Yankees' five-game losing streak. Instead, he suffered a 2010-like meltdown.
The Rays struck for five runs in the sixth, hitting two home runs off Burnett in the inning to steal a 6-5 victory.
"It's disappointing," Burnett said. "Our guys came in here, got in late, put up a good couple innings against their No. 1 guy and I let it slip away. I just missed some spots and wasn't able to stop the bleeding."
B.J. Upton's two-run blast was the game-winner, extending the Rays' lead over the Yankees to three games in the American League East and stretching the Bombers' season-long losing streak to six games, the longest under Joe Girardi since he took over as manager in 2008.
