He has played one of the most criminal fictional characters of all time, Vito Corlene, in The Godfather II. But this time Robert De Niro may be on his way to playing a real-life conman. Sources say the 67-year-old actor in talks to appear as disgraced New York financier Bernie Madoff.

Portrayal: Actor Robert De Niro is in talks to appear as disgraced New York financier Bernie Madoff in a new HBO cable film

 

The movie is said to be based on the The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff And The Death Of Trust a book written by New York Times reporter Diana Henriques.

Close in age to Madoff and De Niro also grew up in New York, much like the fraudster.

Madoff is serving 150 years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to the global Ponzi scam that left thousands of victims penniless.

His family no longer speak to the 72-year-old following his multi-billion-dollar fraud.
