Nissan Motor Co. says it is conducting a service campaign on 5,300 Nissan Leaf electric cars in the North American, Japanese and European markets to fix a potential software flaw that could keep the vehicles from restarting after they are turned off.

The car maker says “a very small proportion” of Leaf owners have reported restarting problems that have required technicians to reprogram the cars’ vehicle control modules to fix what Nissan calls incorrect diagnosis programming.

The company says it chose to perform the service campaign, which is a notch or so below a recall, because the problem isn’t a safety threat. According to Nissan, the vehicles will not stop running while being driven, but may fail to restart after being shut down.

The campaign affects about 500 customers in the U.S., Nissan says.
