Bronx Tour Bus Crash Kills 13
The World Wide Tours bus was on its way from the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut to Manhattan's Chinatown when it overturned at approximately 5:30 a.m. according to New York City Fire Department officials.
Officials say the driver survived, and the Associated Press reports he said a tractor trailer hit the bus from behind moments before the crash.
When the bus skidded into a post on the side of the road, the post cut through the top of the vehicle and nearly sheared the entire roof off.
The accident has shut down traffic in all southbound lanes of Interstate 95 between Boston Post Road exit 15 and Hutchinson River Parkway exit 14.
Fire officials say as many as 33 passengers were on board. They also said six people were critically injured, another two people received serious injuries and 11 had minor injuries.
The injured were taken to St. Barnabas and Jacobi Hospitals. St. Barnabas officials say they are treating three patients with critical injuries and and two with non-critical injuries.
