A man wrecked a car on Long Island on Tuesday night and then opened fire and wounded a responding firefighter before cops shot him dead while the driver was still at the wheel, police said.

The man slammed a Ford pickup truck into a utility pole on Bellmore Ave. in Bellmore about 10 p.m. Packing a stash of guns in the truck, he drove for another block before stopping, police said.

As a firefighter from the Bellmore Volunteer Fire Department approached the truck, the driver opened fire, said Nassau County Police Detective Lt. Kevin Smith.

It was not clear if a 911 call was made.

The firefighter, who was not identified, was hit once, either in the back or the side, Smith said. He was taken to a local hospital and was expected to survive.
