Poll: Most Queens Residents Don't Want Bridge Renamed
In a poll released Monday by the borough's chamber of commerce, 70 percent of the 266 people surveyed don't want a name change.
Last December, Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed renaming the bridge the "Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge" in honor of the former mayor's 80th birthday.
"It's not showing Queens the proper respect. First of all, no one would ever think of changing the name of the Brooklyn Bridge, but in Queens we don't get that respect," said City Councilman Peter Vallone, Junior. "And second of all, it's a Queens icon, it's a landmark. It's what put Queens on the map and brought everybody over here and most people in Queens oppose putting anybody's name on it."
