The woman accused of snatching a newborn from Harlem Hospital 23 years ago and raising her as her own pleaded not guilty Thursday to a federal kidnapping charge.

Ann Pettway was arraigned before Manhattan Federal Court Judge Kevin Castel, who asked her if it were true she was pleading not guilty.

"Yes, sir," she said in a stern voice.

The indictment accuses Pettway of taking Carlina White in August 1987.

White's biological mother, Joy White, was in the courtroom for the arraignment, which lasted only a few minutes and ended with the judge scheduling the next conference for May 2.

A tearful Joy White departed quickly, racing into an elevator with friends, one of whom angrily called Pettway "that piece of trash."

Pettway is being held without bail.
