A brazen thief tunnelled through a wall into a New York City apartment and stole $750,000 of pictures by Andy Warhol and other artists.

Police said the thief broke through a hallway wall into the Manhattan apartment and removed the video surveillance system before stealing the limited-edition artworks, watches and jewellery.

The stolen items include Roy Lichtenstein prints 'Thinking Nude' and 'Moonscape', the Carl Fudge oil painting 'Live Cat' and Warhol prints 'The Truck' and 'Superman'.

A set of eight signed prints by the artist called 'Camouflage' were also taken.

The owner of the apartment, who has not been named but is believed to be president of the Nebraska Meat Corporation Robert Romanoff, was away during the burglary which took place between November 24 and 28.

Watches by Rolex, Patek Philippe and Cartier was among the items stolen.
