Facebook's email service is about capturing the next generation of web users
Facebook needs to grab the next generation of internet users, or it will wither and die as its users age. The social network itself has made it clear that this is the aim of their new product, with Mark Zuckerberg saying kids find email "too slow and formal". Like any community, Facebook needs fresh blood to survive.
Google tried and failed to create a messaging system with immediacy in its now shelved Wave, but Facebook could be the one to really solve the problem of appealing to the next generation by consolidating all communication in one in-box.
Facebook brings Microsoft Office support to inbox
Facebook confirmed on Monday that Microsoft Office Web Apps will be integrated into the social-networking site's new inbox product.
At Facebook's press event in San Francisco to announce the overhaul of its messaging service, the company detailed how users can now view and share attachments on the site. Included on that list is the Microsoft Office Web Apps service, which means Facebook users will be able to open Word, Excel and PowerPoint attachments without having Microsoft's software installed locally.
The 'View on Office.com' feature appears below each file attachment as an option, and opens up documents within the Microsoft Office Web App viewer in a new browser tab. It is possible that more partnered services will be added to this list as time goes by, but for now this is the only option on these file types.
