Fonda the fab: 28 years on from video that changed the way we exercise, she's back (with a new routine, new hip and a new knee)
More than a quarter of a century after she became the workout queen and revolutionised keep fit, Jane Fonda is back with a new set of exercise routines. Despite some repair work over the years - a new hip in 2005, a knee replacement last year and a little cosmetic surgery - she says she now wants to teach pensioners how to stay in shape.
n the 1980s her best-selling workouts were credited with kicking off sales of video recorders and single-handedly creating the home exercise boom.
This time around jumping, running, heavy weights and 'feeling the burn' have been abandoned. Instead, the Oscar-winning actress stretches, lunges and lifts only light weights. However, considering she will be 73 in December, it's all pretty impressive.
And with video a thing of the past, this time her routines are coming out in November on two DVDs. One features areobics called Walk Out and one features weights called Fit & Strong.
They are targeted at the baby boomer generation and 'people who think they are too old and too unfit to start again', says Miss Fonda. 'This is not a high-impact aerobics video,' she added. 'It's a lot of marching and walking.
'The other video is with light hand weights, working different body parts. It's very safe and very fun.'
The new DVDs 'promise to help seniors lose weight and build strength through low impact exercise'.
She said: 'I know from experience and from my research how critical it is for seniors to be physically active. I want to focus on them with things that are easy, perfectly safe, not intimidating and that will get them moving.'
