Angelina Jolie truly is a one-woman publicity machine. As she gleamed on the red carpet this week for the South Korean premiere of her new film, Salt, she didn’t miss a chance to polish her reputation as Hollywood’s very own Mother Teresa.

She spoke about North Korean refugees to China who have been sent back to their troubled country by the Chinese authorities, telling a South Korean press conference: ‘I know you have been helping them and I’m just in solidarity with all of you.’

There is no doubt Angelina genuinely cares for the poor and brings valuable attention to areas that need help.

But you also cannot escape the idea that she enjoys the virtuous glow such philanthropic activity gives her.

And when this charitable performance is teamed with red-carpet outings with her handsome partner, Brad Pitt, it’s a potent PR mix.

At the LA premiere of Salt, Brad was by her side, kissing her as if his life depended on it.

And, despite complaining about intrusions on her privacy, Angelina was happy to wax lyrical to reporters about her love life.

‘Brad always makes me feel sexy and desirable,’ she cooed.

Because, for all Angelina’s posturings about how she never reads anything about herself, she appears to be very concerned with the press she receives and likes to be firmly in control of her public image.

So one can only imagine her fury when she discovered that Andrew Morton, famous for his biography of Princess Diana, has turned his attentions to her.

His latest explosive book - Angelina: An Unauthorised Biography - is due out in the U.S. this week. It’s filled with scurrilous claims about Angelina’s past: heroin addiction, S&M parties, psychiatric hospitals and the time she says she tried to hire a hit man - to kill herself.

It’s true that Angelina has almost boastfully alluded to many of these scandals in the past. But one thing she certainly hasn’t admitted to is, according to Morton at least, is an alleged penchant for married or attached men.

Privately, Angelina has strongly denied these claims of Morton’s - particularly his most controversial allegation that she was determined to win Brad Pitt from his then wife, Jennifer Aniston.

Morton claims she wanted the actor before she had even met him in the flesh. ‘Pitt was one of the triumvirate of men - the other two were [fellow actors] Johnny Depp and Willem Dafoe - whom Angie had watched and wondered about from afar,’ Morton writes.
