FDNY called in to get 600-pound man out of Manhattan apartment
The unidentified man, who weighs more than 600 pounds, stumbled inside the small entryway of his three-story apartment building on W. 139th St. in Hamilton Heights, a friend said.
"He was coming down the steps and he fell down," said the friend, Bill Rice, 79, who works at a church across the street.
An FDNY ambulance responded to a 911 call shortly after 5 p.m., FDNY officials said.
Two stretchers were needed to support the man, FDNY officials said. Witnesses said firefighters used a ladder and ropes to get him down to the sidewalk.
He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, but his condition was not immediately known.
