Paterson Ups Sales Tax On Cigarettes - USA - David Paterson - New York - Business - tax - cigarette

As part of his bid to close the state's budget gap, Governor David Paterson late Friday announced plans to raise taxes on cigarettes by $1.60 per pack.

The proposal is significantly higher than the $1 per pack hike that had previously been discussed.

Paterson plans to include the hike in the emergency spending bill he will forward to lawmakers on Monday, which means a vote against the increased tobacco tax would lead to a shutdown of state government.

Also included in the package are increased taxes on chewing tobacco, cigars and other tobacco products.

The plan would raise an estimated $440 million in new revenue.
