Mona Eltahawy breaks down the controversy surrounding the first Arab-American and Muslim to be crowned Miss USA

Rima Fakih, Michigan’s representative at Sunday’s Miss USA pageant, took home the crown, becoming the first Arab-American to be named Miss USA.

Fakih, 24, beat out 50 other hopefuls (Washington, D.C. gets a contestant) to win the pageant, held at the Planet Hollywood Casino in Las Vegas. Miss Oklahoma Morgan Elizabeth Woolard was the runner-up. The pageant’s judges were an eclectic mix, including NBA star Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir.

Fakih’s reaction to her big win? “Ask me after I’ve had a pizza,” she said.
