Simon Mackie of GigaOm has collected his top 10 favorite search tips to take more advantage of a simple Google search.

The useful pieces of advice include how to use Google as a spellchecker, search on a specific website, calculate in the search field, check the time around the world, convert currencies and search for specific file types among others (see below).

"Search for specific document types. Google can search the web for specific types of files using the “filetype:” operator. If you’re looking for PowerPoint files about GTD, for example, you could try: GTD filetype:ppt"

We personally love the "spellchecker" feature. One must admit, however, it does not always return the correct way of writing. You may want to also check the number of results you receive.

"Entering a word into Google is a quick way to see if you have the right spelling. If it’s incorrect, Google will suggest the correct spelling instead. Additionally, if you want to get a definition of a word, you can use the “define:” operator to return definitions from various dictionaries (for example, define: parasympathetic)," Mackie writes.
