Legendary director Woody Allen has chosen Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard over First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy to the role of leading lady in his new movie set in France.

Allen last year told Bruni-Sarkozy that she would be a "natural" choice for one of his movies.

However, since photographs have been published showing the 42-year-old former supermodel looking tired with swollen cat-like facial features attributed to Botox use, Bruni-Sarkozy’s face is said to have worried Allen.

And then he dropped the bomb last week:

"Carla Bruni is not a woman who earns her living as an actress. She is a first lady.", the director said.

"She could be taken away at any moment by other duties, like a political crisis or an important event. I have to take account of the risks that there could be, and hiring her is far from certain."

Allen confirmed that Marion Cotillard had been picked for the leading role of his new movie and would start filming in the French capital, Paris in July, along with Canadian actress Rachel McAdams and American actor Owen Wilson.

Cotillard, 34, won a best actress Oscar, a Bafta, and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of French singer Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose.
