Sweden bans PIP silicon breast implants over explosion risk

The implant brands in question are manufactured by Poly Implant Prothese (PIP).

According to estimations, breasts of around 35,000 to 45,000 European women have been augmented with faulty implants since 2001.

However, Staffan Strömberg of the Medical Products Agency said that he did not see any reason for Swedish women having the PIP implants to be overly concerned.

The PIP implants were banned by the France's drug administration agency following reports that they had a tendency to burst due to an erroneous mixture of silicon.

The products will now be withdrawn from the Swedish market and their use in clinics throughout the country will be prohibited.
