General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of U.S. Forces and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, is planning to ban fast food at air bases. He has already banned alcohol at his headquarters in Kabul.

General McChrystal has ordered the closure of junk food concessions on NATO airfields at Bagram or Kandahar airfields, meaning hungry troops will not be able to order pizza from Pizza Hut anymore and also Burger Kings at both locations will close their doors. The newly opened TGI Friday’s in Kandahar will stop operating once its contract expires.

The boardwalk area at the Kandahar air base also has an Oakley sunglasses shop, a Subway sandwich bar and a Delice de France. A Harley-Davidson store offering tax-free motorbikes delivered to soldiers’ homes will also close, Times Online reported

“This is a war zone, not an amusement park,” wrote Command Sergeant-Major Michael T. Hall in a military blog.

“Supplying non-essential luxuries to big bases like Bagram and Kandahar makes it harder to get essential items to combat outposts and forward operating bases, where troops who are in the fight each day need resupplying with ammunition, food and water,” he wrote.
