Bernard Madoff beaten by fellow inmate; Prison officials deny incident
After the alleged attack, he was transferred to the facility's low-security medical center for treatment on Dec. 18. The Bureau of Prisons claimed that rumors of an assault were false and that Mr. Madoff suffered from dizziness and hypertension.
However, a felon currently serving time on drug charges, said that Mr. Madoff was, in fact, treated for a broken nose, fractured ribs and cuts to his head and face.
Another inmate, who had been jailed on drug charges, but recently was released from the facility also confirmed the physical assault, as did a third person familiar with the case.
The dispute was said to be about money. The assailant thought that Mr. Madoff owed him.
A former body builder and a black belt holder in Judo, who was serving time on drug-related charges, was suspected to be the attacker.
The Bureau of Prisons said it investigated the incident, interviewed Mr. Madoff, but denied the incident had taken place.
"In December he told staff he was not assaulted, and an investigation was completed following his statements, which corroborated his statements," said Traci Billingsley, a Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman. "Not one inmate has told staff he was assaulted."
