Two Mexican women became first lesbians to wed in Latin America
Lol Kin Castaneda, 33, and Judith Vazquez, 45, wore matching ivory bridal dresses as they attended a multiple wedding ceremony at the city hall, where four other gay couples, among two other lesbians, also got married.
Mexico City's legislature approved gay marriage and opened the way for gays to adopt children on December 21.
The step has angered religious groups in the Catholic country as well as conservatives including President Felipe Calderon.
The Mexico's attorney general has submitted an appeal against the legislation at the Supreme Court and several states are also trying to implement measures to prohibit gay marriages.
Argentina and Uruguay allow same-sex unions, and Uruguay includes adoption rights, but the only previous gay wedding was conducted by an activist governor in Argentina without legal backing.
