American mother gets dead son's sperm, looks for surrogate to give birth to grandchild - USA - health - parenting

21-year-old Nikolas Evans was assaulted in a fight last year outside a bar in Austin, Texas. He was knocked off his feet and struck his temple on the ground. He died of subdural hematoma 10 days after the violent attack. Now his mother is hoping to have a grandchild from him by retrieving young man's sperm post-mortem and inseminating a surrogate mother.

Missy Evans, 43, who runs her own Web development company, said she was criticized for being unmarried, for her lack of formal religion and even accused her of trying to "find a replacement" for her son, reports ABC News.

Others thought it could be confusing for the child to cope with a situation, in which the father is dead and the biological mother is anonymous.

"Everybody is telling me it's unethical what I am doing," said Evans. "But I raised him and he wanted children. I can't get him to film school at UCLA and I couldn't help him live his dream because someone has taken it away from him."

Evans asked a permission from a probate judge to take ownership of the sperm. A urologist donated her services and after five of Nikolas' organs were donated, she retrieved Nikolas' sperm.

The upcoming series of procedure are very costly: Evans will need to find an egg donor who will undergo injections and tests, which will cost at least $20,000. Hiring a surrogate mother to be inseminated and to carry the child could cost another $50,000.

On top of that, there is no guarantee that Nikolas' sperm is viable or that the in vitro fertilization will be successful.
