More NYC high school students taking, passing advanced college exams
More city high school kids than ever before took and passed standardized college-level exams last year, officials announced Wednesday.
The number of city students taking the Advanced Placement exams rose nearly 6% from the past year to 25,272.
More of those kids passed an exam as well: 13,578 kids compared with about 12,798 in 2008.
Nationwide, 16% of public high school seniors passed an AP exam, just 2 percentage points higher than seniors in the city.
"Our new ... initiatives will ensure that these gains in participation and performance are sustained in the coming years," Schools Chancellor Joel Klein said in a statement.
