New York Senate Panel Seeks to Oust or Restrict Monserrate
According to a report released on Thursday, Sen. Monserrate “demonstrates a lack of fitness to serve in this body” of the New York Senate. The 55-page report states that Monserrate should face two options: expulsion or censure. Censure means he would stay in the Senate with much of his powers revoked.
“The Committee recommends that the full Senate convene to consider, debate, and vote on a resolution for expulsion as soon as reasonably possible,” said a Senate press release. “If that resolution fails to pass, the Senate should consider, debate, and vote on a resolution for censure with the revocation of privileges.”
Sen. Monserrate was convicted last year for domestic violence toward his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, which was caught on a security camera. Monserrate dragged Giraldo through an apartment hallway. He also alledgedly slashed her face with a piece of broken glass.
The panel evaluated evidence, tapes, and testimony from both Monseratte and Giraldo before coming up with their conclusion to vote for his expulsion.
Local reports say that Sen. Monseratte's attorney will file a lawsuit against the Senate to prevent them from kicking him out. Prior to Thursday, Sen. Monserrate said he would not meet with the Senate panel, saying the Senate doesn't have the ability to expel him from office.
