Mike McGinn sworn in as Seattle's new mayor
A crowd packed into City Hall on Monday to watch Mike McGinn take the oath of office.
The ceremony may be seen as a honeymoon moment for the new mayor, but if it was, McGinn didn't take time savoring it.
Just hours before taking oath, the city's new mayor delivered tough news, instructing department leaders to find a way to cut some 200 jobs at City Hall.
McGinn said the city must cut jobs and freezing salaries for senior employees in order to begin fixing its budget crisis.
"The longer we put off addressing the budget issue, the more disruptive and the deeper the cuts will have to be later on," he said.
But that's not the mayor's only challenge. McGinn says the city's priorities include finding a new police chief, expanding light rail, and maintaining an open door for the public.
He has has invited the public to an open house at City Hall on Saturday, and says he'll announce even more initiatives at that time.
