Since moving into the White House in January, they've been pictured in just about every newspaper and magazine across the world. But it has taken ten months for this, the first official portrait of America's First Family together, to be released.

It shows Barack Obama, wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 11, and eight-year-old Sasha looking relaxed as they pose in the Green Room and was taken on September 1.

The happy family scenario was very different from the one painted by the president in an interview earlier this week in which he admitted he and wife Michelle struggled to find a balance when they were both working and the children were young.

He said that fathers need to be ‘knocked across the head every once in a while’ to share the burden of parenting with their partners.

Annie Leibovitz, the photographer who took the portrait, is best known for her celebrity pictures.

She took a famous shot of John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the day the former Beatle was gunned down in New York. She also snapped memorable photos of a pregnant and naked Demni Moore and Whoopi Goldberg in a bath full of milk for Vanity Fair.
