Oh my dog – could this be the world's tallest pooch? Boomer - a three-year-old landseer newfoundland – is so big he can keep all four paws on the floor when he drinks from the kitchen tap.

At three feet tall and seven feet long from nose to tail he is making a bid to get into the book of Guinness World Records.

His owner Caryn Weber, of Caselton in North Dakota, has told how her pet has become a bit of celebrity since news of his attempt to make the record books has spread.

She said: “The phone hasn't stopped ringing. It's been a whirlwind.”

Even news organisations as far away as Australia have picked up the story about the 180-pound canine.

But it's not all plane sailing with Boomer as his owner reveals his size can be problematic around the home.

She said: “He comes into the house and his tail is so high everything gets knocked around.”
