MLB savior and judge Sotomayor to throw out ceremonial pitch at NY Yankees game

Sotomayor, 55, will not be the first Supreme Court justice to throw a ceremonial pitch but she will be the first one who previously was dubbed "the judge who saved baseball."

In 1995, when Sotomayor was a federal trial judge, she issued an order that helped end the Major League Baseball strike of 1994-95. Newspaper editorial pages lauded her at the time, and when President Obama nominated her for the Supreme Court last May he touted the case.

"Some say that Judge Sotomayor saved baseball," Obama said, referring to her decision to grant an injunction ordering team owners to deal in good faith with the baseball players union.

Sotomayor, 55, served six years as a trial judge in Manhattan and 11 years on the New York-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She was confirmed for the U.S. Supreme Court on Aug. 8, succeeding the retired Justice David Souter and becoming the first Hispanic justice.
