Pakistani Militants Planning Fresh Terrorist Attacks in India, Prime Minister Singh Says
“Cross-border terrorism remains a most pervasive threat,” Singh told a meeting on internal security in New Delhi attended by chief ministers from across the country. “There is credible information of ongoing plans of terrorist groups in Pakistan to carry out fresh attacks,” Singh said.
Singh froze five years of peace talks with nuclear-armed neighbor Pakistan after 10 gunmen launched attacks on India’s commercial capital Mumbai last November, killing 166 people at a restaurant, railway station and two luxury hotels.
India said the attacks were plotted by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group. Pakistan has admitted the raid was planned on its soil and has begun a trial of five people it has detained in connection with the attacks, including Zaki ur- Rehman Lakhvi, a Lashkar commander.
India also accuses Pakistan of backing separatists fighting Indian rule in the divided Himalayan territory of Kashmir. Pakistan denies the accusation, saying it only lends moral support to a freedom struggle.
