Would-be presidential assassin 'Squeaky' Fromme is paroled
Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, the Charles Manson follower who tried to shoot President Gerald Ford outside the state Capitol in Sacramento in 1975, was released Friday from a federal prison hospital in Texas, ending a 34-year stint behind bars.
Fromme, 60, was freed at 8 a.m. local time (6 a.m. PDT) from the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, said Dr. Maria Douglas, spokeswoman for the prison hospital.
Fromme had been serving a life sentence in Texas. A federal parole board granted her parole in July 2008, but her release was delayed because she had to serve additional time for an escape from a West Virginia prison in 1987.
She completed the 15-month sentence for the breakout and was released "via good-conduct time," Douglas said.
It was not clear where Fromme was heading once she left prison.
