All 13 people on a plane that crashed in Papua New Guinea have been found dead. On board were nine Australians, including a father and a daughter, one Japanese and three Papua New Guineans.

The plane went down on Tuesday morning after it hit bad weather during a domestic flight from Port Moresby to the the rugged Kokoda region.

The crew radioed air traffic controllers as the plane was approaching the airstrip, but it never landed.

Australia had sent a navy ship, three helicopters and two planes to help find the 20-seat plane.

But deteriorating weather conditions made the rescuers' attempts to reach it by helicopter and on foot near impossible.

The De Havilland Twin Otter 300 plane was eventually found at an altitude of 5,500ft in a densely-forested region of mountains.
