U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has held talks with South African President Jacob Zuma in a bid to improve ties between the two countries. The two officials met in the coastal city of Durban on Saturday.

Clinton said U.S. President Barack Obama is looking forward to establishing a new era of cooperation between the two nations.

Clinton, who is on a seven-nation tour of Africa, was also expected to press Mr. Zuma for help in Zimbabwe.

On Friday, Clinton said South Africa can play a key role in encouraging Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe to follow through on this year's power-sharing agreement with Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

(...) Clinton addressed a group of business leaders in Johannesburg Friday, saying that, as the continent's largest economy, South Africa can take a lead role in driving up economies throughout Africa.

Earlier Friday, the secretary of state met with former jailed anti-apartheid activist turned president Nelson Mandela, and said his life was an inspiration to many.
