At least 15 people were killed and 50 injured overnight in Italy when a freight train hauling liquefied petroleum gas derailed and exploded as it passed their homes, officials said on Tuesday.

The accident occurred in the Tuscan city of Viareggio at 11:48 p.m. when a train carrying LPG exploded after derailing, Ferrovie dello Stato, the company that manages the Italian railways, said in a statement posted on its Web site. LPG is a by-product of oil refining and is used for cooking and heating.

The train cars plowed into several homes just outside the rail station in Viareggio, and the resulting explosion collapsed a building and set fire to a vast area.

Areas surrounding the station were evacuated and 300 firefighters are trying to find survivors trapped in the ruins.
“There may be more people trapped in the wreckage, and the death toll could rise,” Garufi said. The firefighters stopped the main blaze spreading to other buildings, he said.
About 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes near the station, Luca Lunardini, the mayor of Viareggio, said in an interview.

The region has declared a state of emergency and Transport Minister Altero Matteoli is to set up a committee to investigate the incident.
