A sketchbook containing drawings by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso valued at between 7 million and 10 million euros ($9.8 million and $14 million) was stolen from the Picasso Museum in Paris.

A police source described security as light and lacking in means. The museum, which is due to close this year for a two-year renovation programme, is planning to reinforce security measures, a source said.

The sketchbook contains about 30 drawings and was stolen either on Monday or Tuesday, during which time the museum was closed to the general public, without any break-in being registered at the museum, which is located in a 17th century baroque palace, police said.

It was kept in a first-floor exhibition room, in a glass case, that could only be opened using specific tools, the French culture ministry said on its Web site.

The sketchbook has a red varnished cover with the word "Album" inscribed on it in gold lettering, and measures 16 centimeters by 24 centimeters (6 inches by 9 inches).
Picasso used the sketchbook between 1917 and 1924 when he was in his late 30s and early 40s.
