Melbourne police break up Indian protest, detain 18
At least 2,000 Indian students, joined by supporters from other countries, staged a sit-in at the Flinders Street Station intersection to draw attention to "curry bashings" -- alleged racial violence against Indians which has left one victim in a coma and strained relations with New Delhi.
Trouble flared when police moved in to clear the protest in Melbourne's city centre before the morning rush hour, punching and dragging away individual protesters, according to activists.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Monday condemned a spate of attacks against Indian students, as police action to break up the protest against violence drew accusations of excessive force.
Rudd stressed the country's diversity and tolerance despite the attacks.
"I speak on behalf of all Australians when I say that we deplore and condemn these attacks, these are senseless acts of violence," Rudd told parliament.
