SRINAGAR, India (AFP) — Indian police Friday used teargas and batons to disperse hundreds of rock-throwing Kashmiris protesting against the holding of national elections in the revolt-hit region.

Police said the clashes erupted in downtown Srinagar when riot police prevented hundreds of Muslims from marching towards key government offices, including the chief minister's secretariat.

Police fired rubber bullets and used teargas to disperse the protesters, who were chanting, "we want freedom" and "Allah is great."

The protesters retaliated by pelting police with stones.

Moderate separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also led a protest march by hundreds of Kashmiris near the region's main mosque Jamia Masjid, where he is the head cleric.
