Mets rally twice, but bullpen falters as Marlins win with run in ninth
MIAMI - John Maine was solid in his return from shoulder surgery, the Mets rallied twice to tie the Marlins, and yet, in the end, it was the same old story Friday night - the Mets' bullpen came up small in a big spot, and they fell, 5-4.
After inheriting a runner on first base with two out from Pedro Feliciano in the ninth inning, sidearmer Darren O'Day walked Hanley Ramirez to push Emilio Bonifacio to second base, then gave up a single to Jorge Cantu that brought home Bonifacio with the game-winning run.
"That's what they pay me to do - face good hitters in a big situation," O'Day said. "I was definitely excited to be in it. Obviously it didn't turn out like I had hoped. Obviously, I didn't even come close to what I wanted to do. I didn't want to go 3-0 with (Ramirez). Once you get to there, you don't want to give him a 'cookie' to hit. But I should at least be able to get one of the two guys out."
It's been a traumatic two days for O'Day, who allowed two inherited runners to score in his Mets debut Thursday in Cincinnati, hours after learning that close friend and former Angels teammate Nick Adenhart had been killed in a hit-and-run accident in California.
