Teen Recovering After Incident At Queens Center Mall
The bandages around 17-year-old Derrik Munoz's head cover a gash so large it required 23 staples. But Munoz doesn't remember how he ended up that way.
"All of a sudden I just blacked out, I woke up in the hospital bed asking doctors what happened," said Munoz.
Munoz and his girlfriend were sitting in two massage chairs on the lower level of the Queens Center Mall Wednesday afternoon. Munoz says he didn't notice 56-year-old Mary Lovelace, three levels up, nor did he see her take off her shoes and jump to her death off the balcony, landing on Munoz. He didn't find out what had happened until he woke up at Elmhurst Hospital.
"What makes a person do something like that, and what are the chances of her landing on me is even more amazing," said Munoz.
"It could have been a couple more inches and he wouldn't be here," said Jonathan Santana, Munoz's brother.
