New curriculum to change how Scottish pupils study

Scottish pupils are to learn traditional subjects by applying them to the study of broad topics - such as flight, the oceans, or France - as part of a new £23million school Curriculum for Excellence.

Fresh details of the curriculum, for pupils aged 3 to 18, were unveiled by the Scottish government yesterday to a cautious welcome from teachers.

Unions have warned that budgets will have to be unfrozen and more resources and staff will be required to see through the changes. Ronald Smith, general secretary of the EIS union, said: “The situation we are currently experiencing, with budget freezes and education spending cuts in some local authority areas, cannot be allowed to continue or it will threaten to derail the delivery of the Curriculum for Excellence.”
