The fourth link in Vikram Chatwal’s growing chain of New York hotels (two more properties are in the works) is a 208-room hotel called Stay. The name is meant as a one-word declarative sentence, and the brand’s marketing department has come up with an endless list of reasons why one should do just that. But doing so in a standard room means trading spacious accommodations for state-of-the-art technology.

For more space, upgrade to one of eight rooms with two double beds or one of the 15 with king beds and walk-in closets. Five stars is a lot to aim for in a former Quality Inn with two slow and awkwardly located elevators, but behind its slick new white facade, Stay manages a hip vibe and professional, friendly service.

THE LOCATION

As a former downtown Manhattanite who used to wonder why anyone would stay near Times Square, I now stand corrected. A jam-packed schedule of business meetings, museum visits and holiday lunches, drinks and dinners all around the city was a breeze with the hotel’s easy access to multiple subway lines. About half of Manhattan is a 20-minute walk away.

THE ROOM

Though improbably small, the room was actually quite comfortable and definitely wired for the 21st century. A neutral “greige” linen-textured wallpaper does its best to fade away behind the wall-mounted 37-inch flat-screen TV and large-framed prints of fashion photos. The crisp 300-thread-count sheets, custom woven in India, are particularly luxurious. The Alcatel phones are Skype- and Bluetooth compatible and also offer video, which is linked to the doorbell so you can see who’s knocking as well to which concierge you’re speaking. The alarm clock is a Bose radio with iPod dock, and the hotel will also lend you a loaded iPod upon request.
